Fighting Over Food - My Reaction

According to The Week article "Fighting over food" which was published in 25, 2011,  the increase of food prices are a widespread phenomenon all over the world especially  in the Middle East and Asia,  which are suffering from hunger. One mean reason  is that exceedins the supply of food which means that people are consuming agreat amount of food what is offered in the market.  The author gives many examples for the rise in a food prices such as, what happened in Chine and Australia after the  environmental disaster, and the political turmoil in Egypt. As a consumer myself, I tend  to disagree with the high food prices. For example, the price of rice and wheat are getting higher because  of the lack of production. Nevertheless, there are other types of food such as vegetables like tomatos and cucumbers and fruits, and meat  that have a high prices that are causirs people to suffer. So, they prefer  limited the less important types of food or they try to shift the types between months. That means that if they have a choice to buy meat in a certain month they are going to buy vegetables in the fallowing month.   Therefore, their families will have the chance to eat all types of food. Indeed, I am facing this obstacle  about how people are living in a poor environment . How can they deal with  the fact of high prices?  increasing food prices  continue to rise?

  1. Definitely if there are no good Agrarian policies that can incentive massive food production in the world, the situation will become worse, particularly in developing countries where the food security is already threatened. I believe that the world has capability to produce enough food to feed its population, though with the drought and increasing of population problems. Unfortunately there is less investment on food production and arable lands are massively used in cultivation of cash crop such as tobacco, biofuel crops and other that have high commercial value.
How do think that people in Middle East can influence food production or food availability?

  2. This is one of the most terrifying things that could happen in our world, to fight over food. I believe now, that scientist should focus more on how to grow plants and trees in very hot and dry weather instead of trying to reach the stars. In many countries especially poor countries they are indeed fighting over food. The food prices are getting higher and higher every month, I don't understand why is it happening. If the population is getting bigger and bigger, there will be more farmers, that mean more crops to grow and more animals to breed. With this way I think the income too will get higher.

  3. I think it is a good ideal to make the food price higher, because maybe in that way people won't waste as much food as they are wasting right now. There are people who have more than enough food they needed and also there are people who are struggle a lot with their food. Rise up the price for food could be good for the rich people, but it is really bad for the poor people, so I think maybe the poor people can start farming a lot, and sell their goods in a good price, than maybe they won't struggle with food that much.
